My personal theory is that Lina convinced the shimmer to imitate fire and thereby destroy itself, but there's holes in that theory. It's also possible that it died bcz she expected it would - the shimmer is like that cave in Empire Strikes Back that only contains what you take with you. If you expect to die, you get death. If you expect to win, you get victory, at least of a sort. My friend thinks that the shimmer fell apart to move on to the next phase - having absorbed the goals of life, to continue and reproduce, it faked its own death so that Lina and Kane could continue on with less suspicion cast on them. I think hot parts of the world might be safe - the temperature in some places is at or above human body temperature, so it'd be effectively blind. Parts of the US might even qualify for this, such as Florida and Arizona. The information about it could also spread faster than it does, so we only need some survivors to report what they see before action can be taken. Checkpoints could be set up and refugee camps erected, with quarantine zones for newcomers. The parasite spreads fast, so no need to hold survivors very long before letting them in. The splinter's singleminded attraction to heat could be its Achilles heel - set controlled fires in infested areas and draw out the parasite zombies. You could also firebomb and sterilize areas that have been overrun. Scientists can study specimens in isolated labs (in case of FUBAR) and maybe find a chemical attack that only targets the splinter. The bad news is, the food web is probably f-ed in the a. All the mammals in the area (except maybe bats, since I doubt an infected bat would be able to fly and spread the splinter, and it's unlikely bats would get close to an infected animal, given their diet) would be infected and would have to be eradicated, so any pests they control and any animals they support are also toast. Predatory birds and vultures would also be done, since birds are warmbloods and would show up on the splinter's radar. Fruit eaters and insectivorous might be ok, but some of the insects would be affected by the collapse of the mammals and the sterilization of the impacted areas. Plants are not going to do so hot either, since humans will have to burn the shit out of large areas to contain the spread of the splinter. The real questions for the rest of the world are 1) can the splinter function well enough near the equator to spread past it to the cool south? If so, Central and South America are in trouble. 2) can the splinter cross the oceans? If so, the whole world that isn't hot enough to blind it is also in trouble. We don't have enough info to answer these questions. I assumed it could infest any animal it came across, but maybe it can't thrive in non-mammals or non-vertibrates. Maybe sea water kills it or cripples it. It would have been fun to see a sequel. In any case, love these videos. Within the facility how was he able to infected so many soldiers without being shot down. The only good thing about this movie was the beginning, evething else is garbage.
